Recently, Miguel Jurado’s gotten a few good-natured jibes at work. “My co-workers tell me I’m swimming in my clothes,” he says. But he doesn’t seem to mind. A serious competitor in our 8-week Summer Leaning Challenge, Miguel shed about 11 pounds and 2 ½ inches in that time. Bringing his total weight loss up to an impressive 30 pounds since he started at CFLB in March 2011.

“It feels really good,” says the leaner, meaner, box-jumping-machine Miguel. “I look younger, feel healthier and sharper.”He lost the weight, and gained a 6-pack. But Miguel has also made some tremendous gains in his endurance and strength. Miguel grew up wrestling and playing basketball. So after marriage, two kids, reconstructive shoulder surgery, and his mid-thirties slowed him down, he started to miss that intensity and competitive adrenaline. That’s when Miguel went searching for a CrossFit gym and found CFLB.

“I was sort of working out at a big gym, but there’s nobody pushing you there,” Miguel explains. “Here, everyone encourages you, but also challenges you.”

He’s quick to add that he enjoys the inclusiveness of CFLB, as well. “There’s a wide range of skill levels here, and no egos,” he points out. “It’s not aggressive, but a friendly competition.”

And it’s obviously been working for Miguel. Before joining CFLB, he admits he could barely run a mile. Now he’s down from an 11-minute to a 7.5-minute mile. “I did a 5K and barely sucked wind,” he says. “I’m ready get back on the basketball court and see if I can grab rim.” We don’t doubt it.

Miguel’s come a long way, with his performance as well as his diet. But he’s not finished striving for his goals. He’s going to keep up his healthy eating habits, keep pushing himself to new limits, practice his Olympic lifts more, and looks forward to having his wife join him in the WODs after delivering their third child. We say, the more Jurados in our gym — and in this world — the better!

"Besides being an awesome athlete, Miguel is extremely nice and always willing to help,” says Coach Chad. “He also has some incredible lift."
