Bring The Pain

A graduate of Officer Candidate School, Matt Capon was no stranger to grueling workouts when he joined CFLB on October 2009. A former high school lacrosse and soccer competitor, avid surfer, mountain biker and skier (he even experimented with yoga), Matt was already fairly fit when he started here. And now?

"I am probably in some of the best shape of my life," Matt says. "For the amount of time I put into CrossFit per week, the results have been tremendous."

Matt first heard about CrossFit from a co-worker. He started trying to do the WODs (workouts of the day) on his own, but the Olympic lifts eluded him. That's when he found CFLB, and the rest is history.

"When I started CrossFit, I was doing beginner and intermediate workouts," Matt recalls. "I'm amazed that now I can now complete most of the Rx (advanced) WODs, which are straight-up brutal punishment."

Matt credits the coaches for having patience as well as for pushing him to reach his current level. "Carlos routinely makes me lift heaver weights and busts my chops if I'm sandbagging it," he says. "The coaches also give great recommendations on what to eat. My diet has changed 180 degrees."

Outside the gym, Matt has seen the benefits of his CrossFit training in his daily life, and on his job as a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard. He says he's happier, healthier, more alert, and sleeps better at night. One surprising side effect: "Strangely, CrossFit has improved my golf game." Functional movements, my friend.

"Matt is a friendly guy even at 5:30am,"  says CFLB Coach Carlos. "He was my first 5:30am athlete and was very welcoming to anyone that would get up early to train along with him. He loves to train and wants to get better. Always willing to take direction in order to be a better athlete. He is very dedicated and it shows in his performance."
