Long Beach, CA, August 30, 2011 - On September 17, 2011, CrossFit Long Beach will join thousands of CrossFit gyms around the world for the Fight Gone Bad 6 fundraising event aimed at supporting our troops and protecting children.
The sixth annual event, Fight Gone Bad raises funds for members of the U.S. armed forces who have been wounded or killed while serving, as well as for their families. During the event, participating CrossFit gyms and their members complete a grueling 17-minute workout that pushes athletes to their limits, both physically and mentally. Participants must raise a minimum of $150 in donations each to compete in the event.
"Last year, our gym raised over $9,000 and had 32 members participate in Fight Gone Bad," says CrossFit Long Beach owner and coach Chad Cross. "This year, we intend to increase that amount, raising at least $15,000 for three worthwhile causes that support our troops and protect our kids."
Funds raised in this year's Fight Gone Bad event will go to support three non-profit charitable organizations: the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Camp Patriot and Infant Swimming Resource®.
Last year, CrossFit Long Beach ranked 33rd out of 1,390 participating gyms in donations raised. In total, Fight Gone Bad 5 raised more than $1.5 million for Livestrong cancer research and the Wounded Warrior Project.
"The recent tragic loss of 30 Navy SEALs brings home the tremendous sacrifice of the servicemen and women deployed overseas," says CrossFit Long Beach coach Carlos Cueva, a former Marine who served in the Persian Gulf War. "Our members are more than willing to suffer, sweat and push their bodies for 17 minutes so that we can honor these soldiers and their families."
A rapidly growing fitness movement gaining popularity around the world, CrossFit has been widely adopted by military, law enforcement agencies, firefighters and first responders as their primary exercise and fitness regimen. CrossFit differs from other fitness approaches by combining constantly varied functional movements, Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics into typically short and very intense workouts. Fight Gone Bad is one of CrossFit's most challenging workouts.
"It's brutal and punishing," explains Cross. "But it's also a fantastic community-building event. Friends, family and kids come out to cheer on participants, and just finishing this workout strengthens the bonds between people from all walks of life. From super-fit athletes to grandparents to folks who just started CrossFit - everyone gets out there and gives it their all. It's very inspiring to see."
CrossFit Long Beach's Fight Gone Bad 6 fundraising event will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 17 at CrossFit Long Beach located at 2831 Junipero Avenue, Suite 602 in Signal Hill, California. All are welcome to come and watch the event.
